Anthem 3

BIG IDEA

Worship is not just an experience, it’s an expense.

MESSAGE NOTES:

WHAT:

Worship is not just when we sing to God. Worship is when you give someone or something your attention, love, and esteem.

What do you think about, talk about, spend your money? Who is the first person you want to talk to when you wake up and the last person before you fall asleep? What does your heart lift up and esteem and cherish and value over anything else? That’s what you worship. Human beings were made to be worshippers. We were designed to look for the beauty and value in life and to worship whatever we see as valuable. So it’s not a matter of whether or not you’ll worship, it’s only a matter of what you’ll choose to worship.

SO WHAT:

Here’s how we stop limiting our worship to just songs. I hope this thought helps grow our viewpoint today on what worship is: Worship is not just an experience, it’s an expense. In other words, worship isn’t just put on for us to come be a part of. Worship is something we give. This is why Romans 12:1 says this about worship:

And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Romans 12:1 NLT

Out of all the things God has given you, worship is one of the only things God wants you to give him.

NOW WHAT:

What are you sacrificing for worship? What are you giving for worship?

Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17 ESV

If worship is whatever you do, anything and everything can be done to worship Jesus. So you take things you already do, or you even already have to do. And you do those things to give attention, love, and esteem to Jesus. Every conversation, every school project, every friendship, every ballgame, every social media post, every family dinner, every car ride, Zoom call, hang out, and chore. everything you do can be done to worship Jesus.

Q3: Could there be anything in your life that you might be “worshipping” other than God?

Q4: Is there something you know you could sacrifice for worship? Something you could give for worship?

Q5: How can you worship God with your life this week?
