What Matters Most - Week 1

BIG IDEA

Life feels meaningless when we seek satisfaction solely in earthly things. True purpose is found in living for God.

KEY VERSES

Ecclesiastes 1:2,

Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.”

Ecclesiastes 1:14

“I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”

Ecclesiastes 2:10-11

“I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure… yet everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”

John 10:10

"I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."

Matthew 6:19-21

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth...but store up treasures in heaven.”

Colossians 3:2 —

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What’s something you’ve really chased after before — a goal, a dream, a prize — and did it actually satisfy you once you got it?

  2. In Ecclesiastes, Solomon says chasing earthly things feels like "chasing the wind." Why do you think those things never fully satisfy us?

  3. John 10:10 says Jesus came to give us “life to the full.” What do you think it means to have a full life? How is that different from just being "busy" or "successful"?

  4. What are some things students our age are usually tempted to chase after? Which ones do you personally find yourself chasing?

  5. What is one thing you can do this week to take a small step toward living for God’s purpose instead of the world's approval?
