Fun* 1

Full over fun.

Big Idea

How far is too far?

Message notes:

Fun = 1) Life of Entertainment 2) Life of Excitement 3) Life on the Edge

Everyone asks how far is too far... but its the wrong question to ask.

1 Corinthians 10:23-24 (NLT) You say, “I am allowed to do anything”[a]—but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is beneficial.  Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others.

Honor Self + Honor Others = Honor God

1 Corinthians 10:23-24 (MSG) Looking at it one way, you could say, “Anything goes. Because of God’s immense generosity and grace, we don’t have to dissect and scrutinize every action to see if it will pass muster.” But the point is not to just get by. We want to live well, but our foremost efforts should be to help others live well.

Freedom with constraints gives us freedom to follow Jesus.

“How far is too far”, is a selfish question.

Full life is a life of adventure, purpose, contentment, community and significance -- choose full over "fun".

Not how far, but how holy can I be is better question.

Group Questions:

Q1 Round Table Question (everyone give a quick answer): Do you ever ask yourself is this too far, or too much?

Q2: Do you feel like God wants to keep you from fun?

Q3: Corinthians says you are “allowed to do anything”[a]—but not everything is good for you.” Do you feel like this is true? If yes, why do you continue to choose things that arn’t good for you?

Q4: Is it possible to honor God by only thinking of ourselves?

Q5: How can it be helpful to have freedom with constraints? Like the parachute for the sky diver.

Q6: Why is it important to have adventure AND purpose, community AND significance?

Action Steps

Encourage your students to take inventory of the choices they make that are “too far” or “on the edge”. Who are they serving and where are these choices leading? C.S. Lewis says : “No one walks straight into hell. They dance around the edge until they fall in”.
