Fasting & Abstaining

BIG IDEA: Fasting/abstaining is temporarily cutting something out to dial yourself in to God.

Daniel 10:3 [3] I ate no delicacies, no meat or wine entered my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, for the full three weeks. (ESV)

Luke 4:2 [2] for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. (ESV)

Matthew 6:16–18 [16] “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. [17] But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, [18] that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (ESV)

Q1: Have you ever fasted or abstained from anything, for the purpose of being closer to God or otherwise?  If so, how did it go?

Q2: Do you relate to any of these seasons of life right now? Season of big decisions, feeling distracted, or feeling detached from God? Which one?

Q3: What is something you could abstain from that would help you create more time to get closer to God?

Q4: Matt said "If you broadcast your fast, you’ve missed the point. That’s like getting on social media to post that you're getting off of social media." Why is it important to keep this between you and God and maybe select accountability partners?

Q5: Matt challenged us this week to pick one day and one thing to abstain from? Are you in? What are you gonna abstain from and what day?
